One of the goals of the Machinima Expo is to find interesting films to screen at the festival. But every year we end up with a couple dozen films that have striking scenes, but don’t quite make it to the full screening list. So, this year we are trying something new: a MachinExpo Highlight Reel. We decided early on that we wanted to include as many filmmakers as possible this year while still keeping the level of quality as high as possible.

So we noted exceptional scenes in those films that didn’t qualify as full screeners and came up with 30 hand-picked scenes from over 200 films submitted to the Expo this year. And what I particularly like about these scenes are how different they are from each other and how imaginative they are. Plus, there are some very strange moments in these scenes some of which are my favorites from any of the films submitted this year.

Our congratulations to those filmmakers chosen this year. We hope that our support of your work will encourage you to create more films in the future.

The 2010 Machinima Expo Highlight Reel films are:

Direct from Muvizu.com: The Expo is co-producing a Muvizu Machinima competition which will accept entries until Dec 10, 2010. Muvizu came to us with the idea of developing a competition for their free software and we thought it was a great idea. After hammering out some of the details, here’s the general announcement from Vince Ryan at Muvizu.com:

Muvizu is pleased to announce a machinima film compeition co-produced with the MachinExpo 2010 gang . Being the new kids on the block, we’re relieved that the choice of prizes and the whole judging process are also being handled by the Expo organisers. Thanks especially to Ricky on this count.

Anyhow, this is the deal: we’d like entrants to submit a video, of any length but animated in Muvizu, on the general theme of “Holiday Hell” (any holiday is acceptable). What was the worst holiday you’ve ever had? Well, make a film in Muivizu about it!

Clips may be post-processed and effects added using whatever software you fancy, but we are interested in entrants trying to showcase what can be done in Muvizu – the more you push its limits the better. We’d love to see your experiments. Combine live-action with Muvizu, silhouette animation, abstract animation, David Lynch-style films; anything you can imagine!

$2,000+ in Prizes will be offered and, boy, are they swell:

Grand Prize = Sony Vegas Pro 10

Runner Up Prizes (4) =

5CD Foley Sound Effects Library

Movie Magic Screenwriter 6 + $100 Renderosity Gift Certificate

Adobe Soundbooth CS5 + Foley Footsteps CD

1 Year Free Training @ Design3 + Blue Snowball Mic

Entrants should register as Muvizu members at www.muvizu.com, which will allow us to contact you, and post their submission – or submissions, we don’t mind how many times you enter – under their account on our site. They should also send the urls of submitted work to the MachinExpo team at expo@machiniplex.com.

Videos must be original, unpublished works containing only material that you have created, or which is copyright-free; this applies to all images, audio tracks, music, embedded video files, dialogue and any other assets that you include in your submissions.

You must be at least 13 years old to enter the competition in your own right, but if you are a dependent member of a Muvizu gatekeeper account, your gatekeeper may submit an entry or entries on behalf of you or your group.

The judges’ decision is final, and no cash or alternative prizes are available.

Entries for the competition must be published on the Muvizu site and the film link sent to the Expo by midnight GMT on December 10.

…psssst! Hey, kid, come here a minute:

if you stop by the Muvizu Second Life booth during the Expo on Nov 20th, 21st, there will be a special content pack for the Holiday Hell Muvizu contest. Remember: only those who stop by the Muvizu booth will have access to this custom content. Stay tuned here and at Muvizu.com for the link to the Muvizu booth in Second Life.

MachinExpo’s sister archive site, Machiniplex, will start a 10-week “Machinima Classics” series this coming week. Over a 10-week period leading up to the Machinima Expo on November 20th and 20st, Machiniplex will screen classic machinima films whose influence and innovation pushed Machinima filmmaking into new ways of self-expression. These 10 films date from 1996 to 2002 and are hand-picked under the guidance of Henry Lowood, Ben Grussi, Michael Nitsche, Brian Mayberry, Claus-Dieter Schulz, Friedrich Kirschner and Phil Rice. The list is not meant to be an exhaustive one, but a subjective 10-film sampling of the best and most interesting films from Machinima’s early years. The films will be released in chronological order according to their date of release.

Screen Cap from "Diary of a Camper"

The first film to screen at Machiniplex will be “Diary of a Camper” which was released by United Ranger Films in 1996. Directed by Matthew Van Sickler with dialogue by Heath Brown. Originally released as a Quake demo file, this is widely considered to be the first machinima film to use narrative and text-based dialogue. Most early machinima consisted of speed-runs or recorded gameplay, this film changed all of that. Head over to Machiniplex and click on the Classics tab at the top of the page.

For those interested in Machinima History the Wikipedia entry on Machinima has decent coverage of Machinima’s early years. Dave Morris, Matt Kelland and Dave Lloyd’s nifty little book Machinima provides a very nice section on Machinima history. Paul Marino’s “Machinima Jukebox” page at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image covers seminal moments in machinma history and is very much worth your time following the links. Overall, there is much to be gained from a Bing or Google search on early machinima. My favorite read was a brilliant essay by Katie Salen titled “Arrested Development: Why Machinima Can’t (or Shouldn’t) Grow Up“. It’s part of a series of essays called “The Machinima Reader” edited by Henry Lowood and Michael Nitsche (publication forthcoming). Certainly one of the best things written on early machinima.

The full list of films will be published at the Machiniplex blog early next week. Each entry at the blog will discuss the film and it’s importance as a film and as a part of Machinima history. The MachinExpo, in addition to providing screenings of high-quality contemporary machinima films, wants to look back at where our innovative artform/entertainment has come from. We hope you enjoy the series.

As I write this the Machinima Expo has received 131 entries for the November 22, 2009 festival. I can’t tell how proud that makes us feel. We have been much better organized this year in watching all of the entries and voting on which ones we think we should screen.

Rather than list all of the screeners at one time, we are going to announce them in small groups over the next several weeks. Today, we are listing 10 machinima films we think should be screened at the Expo. As we confirm more screeners, we’ll announce them here. Remember, if your film isn’t listed here it might be on the next round.

Also, we have created a separate page on our new Machinima Expo called “List of Films Screening at the Machinima Expo” (clumsy, but accurate) where you can see the list with a screen cap from each film which is linked to the location where the film can be viewed. Of course, any filmmaker who gave us a private link to a film not yet released to the public, we will keep that link private.

Phil, Damien, Ingrid and I would like to thank the Machinima community for responding so strongly to our festival. We really appreciate the support.

Here are the first 10 films we’ve decided to screen:

Phil, Damien and I are proud to announce that the 2009 Machinima Expo will take place on Sunday, November 22 from 9AM (Pacific Time) to 2PM (Pacific Time) on the University Campus Suffolk’s island in the virtual World of Second Life. We’ve done our best to set a time that most people in northern hemisphere times zones could accommodate. Here’s a time converter if you want to see what the Expo event times will be in your time zone:

Time Zone Converter

MachiniExpo 2009 is being produced with the assistance of the University Campus Suffolk http://www.ucs.ac.uk. University Campus Suffolk (UCS) is a unique collaboration between the University of East Anglia and the University of Essex. UCS was created in August 2007 in order to establish a university campus in Suffolk, UK. The UCS island in Second Life is a teaching and learning resource available to staff and students in the School of Arts & Humanities.

When we put out the word we were looking for a space to hold the 2nd Expo event, Eddie Dugan, Senior Teaching Practitioner in the School of Arts and Humanities (and who teaches a course in machinima at UCS) contacted us and offered the school’s facilities in Second Life along with assistance in producing the festival.

We will be screening a selection of UCS student machinima films as part of our screening series and there will be several UCS students on hand as helpers and assistants at the festival. You’ll recognize them by the special t-shirts they’ll be wearing (or perhaps an unusual hat?).

After an extensive tour of the UCS island in Second Life, we are excited at how well the structures will fit with our Expo program. There is a large, three story building with open interiors for information areas, panels/presentations, screening sessions and even a top floor lounge for folks who want to talk and drink fun virtual cocktails. Here are a few pictures:

There’s also a wonderful structure just off of the island. You can see the stone walkway that leads to this cabin in the above photo. Some very smart person set the stones just under the level of the water so that the walk to the cabin is very pleasant aesthetically.

This cabin is very much like a 50’s style bachelor pad all decorated in bright colors and square furniture. Lovely views of the ocean expanse all around and an especially beautiful view of the UCS campus building on the island. Phil and I spent a lot of time here mulling over logistics and debating programming. Here’s a shot of our mull session (I’m away from the camera; Phil is closest with his legs inside of the couch)

And here is the bachelor cabin from a view a little further away. Man, I just love flying in Second Life. We awer planning a very special event to take place here. One that we will be announcing soon. There will be a very slight re-design of the space to accommodate the programming.

Many thanks to Eddie, his students and co-workers for offering to help and then for working with us to make the Expo happen. We’ll be announcing the programming and the first round of film screenings on this blog very soon.

One of the earliest ideas for the Expo was to feature a keynote speaker. I thought it was important to have a well-known figure in Machinima (or related fields) to speak at the Expo, but also to address the wider Machinima community in such a way that we re-think and re-imagine the artform we are so passionate about.

We initially came up with a list of several people to nominate as keynote speaker, but after consideration there are only two people we would like to deliver this important speech at the Expo: Phil Rice and Mike Jones.

Phil Rice, in addition to being one of the organizers, is an important figure in Machinima. He is a superb filmmaker, so he understands the practical aspects of machinima filmmaking; he is a leader in the commmunity, providing a bi-weekly podcast on Machinima plus a very active Machinima blog. He hosts a monthly Machinima “chat” which brings in people from all across the Machinima community spectrum. And he actively works behind the scenes to promote, support and collaborate with many individual filmmakers and Machinima film companies.

When I asked Phil if he would consider being the keynote speaker, without hesitation he said “Yes” and immediately began ruminating over what his subject would be. In fact, I think he’s still sitting in front of his computer thinking about it.

Mike Jones, on the other hand, comes at Machinima from an entirely different direction. I first came across his brilliant new media blog, Digital Basin, when it was added to the Machinima RS feed and have been a devoted reader. Mike is a cutting edge critic of “new media” which Machinima is very much a part of. He is also the head of the Technology department at the International Film School in Sydney, Australia, and has published many articles on film, new media and aesthetics. His home page, luciferjones.com, is a nice intro to him and his work.

Over the last year as I’ve read dozens of his well-written and imaginative posts on everything from sound to video encoding practices, he has always included Machinima as part of his thinking. In fact, when I contacted him about being a keynote speaker at the Expo (something he is very enthusiastic about) he included a marvellous riff on Machinima. No question he is itching to present his ideas in a public forum like the Expo.

As usual, the primary factor in who will be our first keynote speaker at the Machinima Expo is money. We have a decent (but limited) budget and travel/housing is expensive. The Arcadia Festival (our sort of mother organization) might be able to help us out here, but it’s still being negotiated. We should know it the next few weeks. I’ll be making a public announcement here at the Machinima Expo site.

My thanks to both Mike and Phil for their patience and willingness to be a part of our still developing Festival. I only wish we could have you both. Hmnn…now there’s a thought.
